Question: What are the 3 most important things to consider when teaching kids? Answer: Safety, safety, safety! The Kid-Jitsu® Certification Program was developed by Larry Shealy, a Black Belt in Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu and Charles Dos Anjos, a Black Belt in Royce Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Kid-Jitsu was adapted directly from the teachings of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to provide a safe, proven method of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction for children. With the popularity of mixed martial arts and the UFC, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has moved to the forefront of self-defense systems. However, as popular as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has become, there were previously no true teaching methods for children. Aware of the need for a program tailored specifically for children, Larry Shealy and Charles Dos Anjos set out to provide the blueprint for children's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I personally attended an instructor certification seminar. It hits home the safety aspect of teaching kids as well as the values that are sometimes lost with alot of martial arts instruction. I then stayed on for a kids class. They were respectful, well mannered, exhibited good self control and self discipline. We then ran a mock tournament for about 30 kids. They were technically proficient, no one was hurt in any way, and they had fun. I whole heartedly endorse the Kid-jitsu program and look forward to attending the next level of training.
